I really loved this insight Liz thanks for sharing! I can relate so much to what you have said. I’ve been off instagram, well the “big 3” insta, Tik Tok and Facebook for a month. I am really enjoying it! But it is so different now to when it began (I was there at the start I remember the filters and I too have filtered photos in Valencia filter of my coffee) I think our millennial brains are just frazzled,we have been through every upgrade and change of it and we are just burnt out with it. And maybe we are realising a large part of our lives growing up have been consumed by it and we are craving our time back. Xx

I’m so glad someone relates to this that’s amazing that you have had a month away from the big 3 (love that name will be using that haha!) YES VALENCIA that was my jam 😂 I think you have hit the nail on the head, our brains are just tired after every iteration and all the information flooding us every day. It’s so nice to step away and just chill ya know?! Thank you so much for your comment! ❤️

I found this so helpful. Thank you. I’m considering doing the same ~ just like the others said. ☺️ I want to feel more grounded and connected to myself. I want to read more books. I’ve done it before for the odd month or two but every time I go back, it gets quicker and quicker before the ick sets in. The checking out of my body, the constant checking in, the urgency, the overwhelm and the time I won’t get back. Maybe it’s a sign. 🤔

I think it is 😉😆 I can’t wait to see where it takes me.

I am so happy to hear this was helpful to you! You are so right, that ick really does settle in and stick around doesn’t it? It’s kind of wild how quickly your mind clears when you’ve taken a break though too and we don’t realize how much time we get back to do other things, like read love that! It’s a sign 😅🤭 hehe

I lurk on Instagram but haven’t posted since 2020. I miss it at times and have considered going back, but it’s just not the same anymore. I also lurk on threads and people complain there non-stop about the algorithm and how nobody sees their content. I feel like if I go back, it’ll be a vortex of stress difficult to extricate from. I like being a casual observer and truthfully don’t even log on anymore since Substack has become my new addiction. Working on that, but overall far better than IG!

That’s so cool that you have been more casual with your use of instagram for so long I would like to be able to be more detached from it (which this break has def helped with!) that’s awesome! I agree about substack being it’s own form of addictive but it feels more productive and less stimulating for sure also working on that 😅 ty so much for your comment I totally relate!

I ended up deleting Instagram a few years ago, opting to just use Snapchat to keep in contact with people. (I don't like giving my phone number out). Then I decided to delete Snapchat last year and went back to Instagram. I've had those moments where I deactivate social media only to go back to it a month later; I feel that FOMO too. I try to persuade myself that I don't, but I could have made a choice and just delete social media altogether. It's definitely something I have difficulty navigating, but for now it's a part of my life

So eloquent and thoughtful, friend! 💗 I’ve also gone through my social media hiatuses. There’s a book on my list to read regarding raising kids in this technology age: The Opt Out Family. Idk if it’s good but it sounds good lol
